A cardiovascular surgeon by profession, Dr. John Polk is an independent professional coaching consultant for organizations and professionals who want to improve their lives, their careers, and their industry.


Dr. Polk is the founder of Directions In Coaching. The organization uses coaching strategies that help individuals and organizations focus on setting goals, creating outcomes and managing personal and organizational change. He has a master’s degree in education, with a concentration in Policy, Planning, and Administration from Boston University. He is also certified in Values-Based Coaching. Dr. Polk is an Associate Dean for Diversity & Inclusion (ADDI) at Boston University School of Medicine, where he coaches medical students, resident physicians, and faculty.


With years of experience in coaching, Dr. Polk uses evidence-based coaching strategies grounded in positive psychology, appreciative inquiry, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness. He specifically enjoys coaching individuals and organizations that face challenges which interfere with their growth and development.
